About Atlantic puffins
The Atlantic puffin, also known as the Common puffin, is often called the "clown of the sea" due to its colorful beak and striking appearance, is a small seabird found in the North Atlantic Ocean. These birds spend most of their lives at sea, only coming ashore during the breeding season to nest in colonies on cliffs and rocky islands. Renowned for their excellent swimming skills, puffins use their wings to "fly" underwater, diving to catch small fish like sand eels, their primary food source. Their bright beaks, a hallmark of the breeding season, fade to a duller color during the winter. Puffins are monogamous, often returning to the same burrow with the same mate year after year, where they raise a single chick, known as a puffling. While they are widespread, Atlantic puffin populations are vulnerable to threats such as overfishing, climate change, and habitat disturbance, which impact their food supply and nesting sites. Conservation efforts are vital to ensure the future of this iconic seabird, often regarded as a symbol of the rugged beauty of the North Atlantic.
The Global Species Collection aims to highlight species that are familiar to many, as they are widely distributed and in many places numerous. In several geographical regions, they have played, and still play, important roles in human cultures, and they have names in many languages. They are some of the most loved and charismatic species, still they hold many secrets left for science to unveil.
